In days past, more people found sales to be very intimidating. Personally, I was terrified of selling and thought that I wouldn’t even be able to sell food to a starving person. With the advancements in technology and the rapid growth of social media as a platform, gone are those days. In today’s marketing, companies can generate demand (i.e., Demand Generation – brand awareness and interest) and leads (i.e., Lead Generation – converting those interests into contacts, then into potential customers) by simply utilizing websites, blogs, digital ads, social media content, etc.
These advancements in technology have also allowed for a drastic increase in two-way communication between customers and companies. The benefits of increased two-way communication are that it enables companies to focus on the needs of their customers, inform their customers of all things related to the company (i.e., increased transparency), and build trust with customers. An example of how technology has changed the way we market is where many companies used to depend on TV ads, radio ads mailers, and cold calls to increase brand awareness and generate leads. However, it is a lot easier today because a company can simply create content and then “follow” and “like” its way to increased brand awareness and leads. As a new business, it is imperative that you utilize all the appropriate channels you can in order to generate demand and leads for the business.
