Have you ever thought to yourself: “My company’s marketing would be way more successful if only I knew how consumers think!”? Well… you already know that. How do you know?… Because you are a consumer as well!
When developing social media marketing campaigns and other forms of marketing strategies, it is very important to remember that you are also a consumer so you need to market to our audience the way that you would want to be marketed to. Sounds a lot like the Golden Rule right (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”? If you think about it, it makes sense.
If, as a consumer, you hate pesky ad pop-ups and banners on websites, annoying sales calls, junk mailers, junk email newsletters and offers, almost 30 minutes’ worth of previews before the feature movie starts, an unrelated and lengthy add in the middle of the video you’re watching on YouTube, or totally irrelevant (to you) sponsored ads as you scroll through Facebook and Instagram, then why would you, as a marketer, expect for your customers to like those things? You cannot expect them to. It is imperative that you learn about your target audience’s likes, wants, preferences, what they find relevant, and how they prefer to be marketed to/ how they respond to different forms of marketing, and then utilize the most effective methods.
One of the most costly mistakes you can make with your social media marketing efforts is to push content to your audience before you know their preferences, and also to do unto them as you would not want to be done unto you.
So, do yourself a favor – show your audience how you can add value and treat and market to your them how you would want to be marketed to.
