about me

Jewel Opal Amethyst Nicholson = experience, hard work, and continued learning and growth in marketing, branding, and business development.

My mother named me Jewel Opal Amethyst because she believed that I would be a very precious daughter that would be of value and accomplish great things.  I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Jamaica. In my earlier years, I was raised by my grandmother, a deaconess and teacher, who instilled the drive to be disciplined and work hard. As a result of this environment, I excelled in academia which resulted in me attending high school at 10 years old and graduating at 15 years old.

I attended community college to pursue Management Information Systems (M.I.S) because of my love for technology. However, when I realized that although I loved web design, I was not a fan of C++ programming, I decided on another route – Business Administration. Completing my first degree in Business Administration enabled me to learn effective strategies for effectively managing any type of business. The type of business I wanted to manage and or build, however, was the next answer I needed. While considering options for my future, I took the opportunity to work with one of the largest insurance companies on the island, where I gained experience in the areas of organizing and filing, data entry, customer service, call center development, and provider relations.

I enjoyed my role and loved the team I worked with, but I decided to migrate to the United States for the opportunities that it would bring. My first stop… New York City! In New York, I continued in the customer service field starting in a call center and later a department store. As I worked in these roles it further dawned on me that I wanted to be able to help others. I figured that healthcare could allow me to do that, so I became certified in an entry-level healthcare role. For various reasons, I later decided to relocate to the Sunshine State – Florida.

Upon relocating to Florida, I attended college to further my career in healthcare (allied health). This led to great experiences in working with geriatric patients, and then managing a rehab department of up to 20 employees (including full-time and per diem), temporarily managing the rehab department at two sites, and also having the opportunity to be a director that my fellow DORs can turn to for assistance and guidance whenever needed.

But… the journey does not end there… it is only the beginning.

I have made many mistakes which taught me valuable lessons, including the understanding that for there to be a family legacy and the ability to truly live life the way I feel that I should, there has to be a business that would allow for better opportunities as well as job creation for others. This led to partnering with a sibling to develop a food and beverage business that he envisioned, then we will, later, expand our portfolio to add a healthcare business that I envision.

Since branding and marketing are important needs of every new business, I embarked on a journey to pursue a Master of Science Degree in Marketing (MSM). The MSM degree has helped me to develop skills and competence in:

  • Teamwork
  • Networking
  • Time Management
  • Business Marketing plan development including market and competitive landscape analysis
  • Website design and management
  • Brand creation and development
  • Blog/article writing
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Search Engine Marketing
  • Digital Marketing
  • Social Media Marketing (planning and execution)
  • Marketing Research
  • Integrated Marketing Communications
  • Consumer Behavior
  • Critical Thinking
  • Analysis of marketing data
  • Interpretation of data to provide valuable insights
  • Creating media campaigns using various platforms

Throughout the years, I have learned pertinent skills that enable me to be a good problem solver, to adapt to situations, to accomplish set goals, and to excel in many areas.  I continue to learn daily and truly relish the opportunity to always be learning new things. I look forward to the continued growth that will come in life, because knowledge and experience gained will enable me to help others. The journey continues….
